End these three hair-lotion myths for stronger and healthier hair
How does one get their hair oiled and how long should it stay in? Here are some doctor-recommended instructions.
The oldest trick in the book when it comes to having long, strong, thick, and shiny hair is to oil it. Oiling your hair not only provides your hair with vital nutrients, it also helps you recall your mother or grandmother's Champi (massage) on the weekend. Working those good old times, baby!
A dermatologist says, "The oil acts as a shield against the hair and also nourishes the hair and the scalp, it coats the hair to prevent sun damage, it makes it look shinier by removing premature graying, and it is a great conditioner that also makes it shiny.
Here’s how to oil your hair:
Step 1
Before you heat the oil, be sure it is warm enough to keep the hair healthy.
Step 2
Divide your hair into sections using a wide tooth comb to get it free of tangles.
Step 3
Massage the oil on your scalp in circular motions, using your fingers. Be gentle and avoid rough or harsh strokes.
Step 4
Before you oil your scalp well, you should knead the length of your hair between your palms to get it well oiled. Don't forget to oil the ends of your hair as they can cause breakage and split ends.
Step 5
After loosely braid your hair and leave the oil for an hour or two, wash it with a shampoo. You can also apply a hair oil after washing your hair, if you want to replace hair serums.
For how long should you leave oil in your hair?
It is not always true that individuals who oil their hair overnight experience dandruff, especially if their skin becomes oilier as a result of hormonal changes.
Dr. Chhabra advises against keeping the oil for longer, oiling an oily scalp, and oiling in case of dandruff because it does not help and may cause serious scalp conditions. She suggests rinsing the oil off with cold water and then using a mild shampoo and hair mask to wash it away.
